Ventielen van het type 3/918 worden bij voorkeur gebruikt waar vanwege de vloeistofeigenschappen geen zittingventielen kunnen worden gebruikt.
Een ander argument ten gunste van dit ontwerp is dat het in alle richtingen kan worden doorstroomd en afgesloten en dat het zowel in horizontale als in verticale pijpleidingen kan worden geïnstalleerd.
Stuurventielen van het type 72 en 81 worden gebruikt als regelventielen.
